Pictorial Representations of Aboriginal Life in Canadian History Textbooks: Deconstructing Stereotypes?
Original language description
This research study examines how Canada's policy of reconciliation toward the Aboriginal peoples has been reflected in the country's history textbooks. Sixteen textbooks published between 1895 and 2007 have been examined for choice of illustrations and their captions, with the goal of determining if, and how, have the older stereotypes been eradicated. Well toward the end of the twentieth century the dominant historical narrative used to be concerned primarily with the process of nation-building, both political and economical, which effectively excluded any Aboriginal presence and contribution. The author will offer comparisons between older and newer textbooks, and try to estimate how much progress has been achieved in presenting less stereotyped visual images.
