The Fairy Tale Space of Neil Gaiman's Children's Fiction
Original language description
The aim of the paper is to analyse the space concepts of Neil Gaiman’s children’s fiction, namely in the context of modern fairy tale adaptations. In the last decade, Gaiman wrote two fairy tale adaptations of the Brothers Grimm stories of The Sleeping Beauty and Hansel and Gretel. The paper will focus on the thematic changes of Gaiman’s adaptations, the structure of his modern fairy tales, its Gothic atmosphere and mainly on the space concepts in the fairy tales The Sleeper and the Spindle and the eponymous Hansel and Gretel, written by Neil Gaiman in 2013 and 2014, respectively. Arnold Van Gennep’s theory of The Rites of Passage will be used as the main approach to literary analysis and interpretation.
