The paper aims to define the concept of liminality of the fictitious andfantastic spaces of Neil Gaiman's novel Neverwhere (1996), according to FarahMendlesohn's classification of the four types of fantasy. In Rhetorics of Fantasy,Mendlesohn mentions Neverwhere as a fantasy of the portal-quest type. Gaiman'sconcept of liminality in his fantastic fiction is the claim the paper is going to expand anddevelop in the context of the Gothic tradition, the horror atmosphere of the novel, thesense of irony, ambiguity and the grotesque elements.
