This study - essay - shows sustainable development from the historical point of view, how development of selected cases of pre-sustainable development ideas encouraged the contemporary concept of sustainable development. The purpose of this brief historical excursion is to show the lack of time in keeping sustainable development as a traditional system of principal questions: what and how to develop and sustain ? connected with practical implementation of sustainability and (with the questions) why andwhen to sustain and develop, as well as with moral appeals and ideas. History shows the traditional understanding of this system like a relatively stabile in terms of not rapidly changing environment on the global level. The emerging question when to develop and sustain can bring the shift towards transition to SOStainabiliy.
