EU ETS and biomass co-burning: A driver for green investment in the power industry sector?
Original language description
Emission trading scheme (ETS) is a major economic instrument aimed at reduction of carbon dioxide, the most significant greenhouse gas. The article examines factual effects of ETS on economic situation and decision-making in public energy sector. For this purpose, actual economic and technical data on a selected heating plant were used to illustrate consequences of the third trading period (2013-2020) and possible options of the company's management to mitigate cost impacts of ETS were evaluated. Changes in rules for allocation of emission allowances would mean dramatic increase in overall costs and authors demonstrated that savings of unconsumed allowances due to green investment in more efficient boilers and utilization of biomass would tip the balance in favour of acceptance of the reconstruction project.
