Our goal with this volume is to provide readers interested in a possible future of human society a mosaic view, one created from a synthesis of different research disciplines and different parts of world, and all dealing with the thorny topic of environment and society. Over the past few years, we have asked one basic question of our colleagues at international scientific activities in Europe and the US: Are we seeing a shift of world society towards one that we can say is an "environmental society"? Asconversations on this question blossomed and began to achieve common ground, we asked experts in different disciplines to write about their own research regarding societal encounters and effort to solve environmental problems. The result is this book, and in it readers will find the responses of scholars and thinkers from Canada, United States, China, and Europe.
