Soil as a key to food security: social perception of soil erosion in the Czech Republic (a case study)
Original language description
The chapter presents a sociological case study of the perception of soil erosion by various social groups (urban and rural dwellers and farmers) carried out in South Moravia, a region with intensive agriculture and a high level of soil erosion in the Czech Republic. The chapter is embedded in the broader context of the role of soil for human beings in general and what kind of risks for our civilization soil erosion means in terms of both losses of amounts and fertility of soil. Our results revealed that distance from areas of soil degradation is an important factor influencing perception of this problem. The hypothesis that people living in urban areas perceive the problem of soil degradation as less important than people living in rural areas and farmers has been confirmed. As regards the role of available information about the problem, the urban population more frequently than the other two groups mentioned that they need more information. This corresponds with their position of alienation from agricultural production and less contact with agricultural land.
