Hydroelectric Power Plants v. Nature in the Czech Republic
Original language description
The devastating impact of dams and weirs, associated with the operation of small hydroelectric power plants (SHPs), is quite heavy in the Czech Republic. The construction and operation of more SHPs presents a threat of considerably devastating the ecosystems of small streams. The power output of the SHPs is limited but they considerably change the natural discharge regime of small streams; the weirs needed for their construction leads to the fragmentation of their longitudinal profile and presents barriers for upstream fish migration.
