Wave propagation in flagella
Original language description
In this chapter, after a brief presentation of waves developed by flagella, details about ultra - stucture and composition of flagella are presented; then mechanical aspects of flagellar waves generation and propagation are discussed based on the main experimental results published in the literature. Models accounting for wave mechanics are also presented prior to several examples illustrating experimentally the observation of wave generation and propagation. A last part of this chapter describes briefly situations dealing with biological variants of flagellar shape as well as a brief overview of waves developed by cilia which form gregarious lawns of cells appendages structurally and functionally similar to flagella. For better understanding of some biological aspects of cellular movement, readers can consult a paper dealing with introduction to cell motility by Fletcher and Theriot (2004).
