Carp Aquaculture in Europe and Asia
Original language description
In countries of central and eastern Europe the first pond constructions were recorded in monastic homesteads. Ponds were also constructed for utilization of water power, as drinking and non-potable water sources, and pond dams provided road network in inaccessible swampy terrain. Before the beginning of 17th century (before the start of Thirty Years' War), total surface area of ponds in Bohemia crown lands achieved 180 000 ha. The biological productivity of ponds, characterized as their carrying capacity, is significantly dependent on the inclusion and function of ponds in a cultural landscape. The management of fish-culture measures concerns the nutrition of pond biocenosis with organic fertilization-based nutrients, especially the use of indigenous "green manure" and other carbon sources. The presence of carbonaceous substances and equivalent calcium ion applied in the form of limestone or lime aims to secure the carbonate neutralization capacity for the stability of water pH. The de
