Effect of Spatial Constrain on the Self-Organizing Behavior of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky Reaction
Original language description
The effect of the deformation by the available space on the evolution of the self-organizing system in space was observed. As an example of primitive self-organizing system, a common-known oscillating Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction was chosen. A calculation of point information gain entropy density, which determines subtle changes in the geometry of patterns and identifies states of the system, was used as a method of pattern detection. When the BZ system came into states of the spatial constriction, we observed changes in duration of initiation phases of the reaction and intrusions in the period and shape of traveling waves. Transfer of the reaction mixture from a circular dish into a square dish induces generation of atypical waves. The results indicate that the formation of patterns is independent of the actual concentration of chemicals in the broad range of concentrations. Dilution of structures occurs at the end of the process, when the organic substrate and bromine oxidant are exhausted from the reaction mixture.
