  • Original language description

Antigoitrogenic effects of increased intake of iodine (250 mg per animal and day) and selenium (150 mg per animal and day) were monitored for 350 days in 24 sheep of the Šumavská breed receiving 4.2 mmol of glucosinolates (GLS) and 4 g of nitrates per animal per day (Table 1). The sheep receiving GLS and nitrates without iodine and selenium supplementation developed enlargement of the thyroid gland, low iodine concentration in blood plasma (39.1 mg/l), milk (27 mg/l) and urine (45.1 mg/l), low T4 level(60.7 nmol/l), high T3 level (Table III) and a narrow T3 : T4 ratio. Neonatal goitre was diagnosed in lambs born to such ewes. Critical periods for the development of hypothyroidism were the breeding period, pregnancy, and lactation. Iodine supplementation had favourable effects (higher blood plasma concentrations of iodine and T4, normal size of the thyroid gland) in sheep challenged with GLS and nitrates. Selenium concentrations in blood plasma of ewes unsupplemented and supplemented w
