  • Original language description

Species composition of selected aquatic insects (Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Megaloptera, Trichoptera, and Coleoptera) at two sites of the Malše River has been compared: a strongly regulated river segment in the town of České Budějovice in southern Bohemia, Czech Republic (18 species of 10 families found, 10 of them living exclusively in a small right-hand tributary) and another, much less disturbed site ca 3 km upstream (24 species of 15 families). Key microhabitats in the regulated site such as exposedroots of riparian trees and streambed are strongly affected by human activities (e.g., very slow current, depth of several meters, high level of siltation). We detected more diversified and richer aquatic insect community in the upstream site. We foundseveral noteworthy species, including beetles Hydraena pulchella and Elmis obscura associated with fine exposed roots, and mayfly Oligoneuriella rhenana, a relatively rare and sensitive species rare in the Czech Republic.
