Biodiversity is important for its contribution to the sustainable function of different ecosystems. To understand this role and the way biodiversity might be threatened through various pressures, such as land use change, pollution, climate change and invasive species, we must first asses its richness and how it changes throughout time and varies under different conditions. The ALTER-Net workshop focused on the application of molecular techniques to study biodiversity, structure and function of freshwater planktonic communities in a broad range of organisms, lake ecosystems and scientific fields and was followed by the discussion about the use and usability of molecular methods in the assessment of biodiversity in freshwater systems.

Czech description

Biodiversita je důležitý faktor ovlivňující trvale udržitelný rozvoj tůzných ekosystémů. Biodiverzitu je nutné nejdříve definovat, aby bylo mozne pochopit, jak múže být biodiversita ovlivněna různymi faktory jako je změna využití půdy, znečistění, změnaklimatu nebo rozvoj invazních druhů. Hlavní náplní ALTER-Net workshopu bylo využití molekulaárních metod ke studiu biodiversity, struktury a funkce sladkovodních planktonních společenstev v širokém rozsahu organismů, jezerních ekosystémů a vědeckých oborů. Workshop byl následován diskusí o možnostech využití různých molekulárních metod ke studiu biodiversity v sladovodních systémech.
