Soil and freshwater micro-algae as a food source for invertebrates in extreme environments
Original language description
The role of micro-algae as the main or the only primary producers in extreme habitats is introduced. Methods used for algae - invertebrate studies are presented. The knowledge the role of algae in food biology of particular groups of invertebrates is summarized both at the general level and with special focus to extreme biotopes. Factors affecting ingestion and digestion of algae by invertebrates (algae- driven, invertebrate-driven, environmental factors) are discussed in detail. Ecological impact of feeding of invertebrates on algae in extreme environments is stressed.
