Khawia japonensis (Cestoda: Caryophyllidea): another invasive parasite of carp, Cyprinus carpio L., imported to Europe

  • Original language description

A caryophyllidean cestode, Khawia japonensis (Yamaguti, 1934), which occurred originally in East Asia, is reported from Europe for the first time. The paper calls for adequate preventive measures during transport of economically important fish and theirintroduction from abroad. In the Province of Ferrara, import of young carp is the main activity of the Fisheries Department for populating the canals because carp fishing (angling) is growing in popularity. The recent introduction of another metazoan parasite of common carp demonstrates that no lesson has been learned from outbreaks and economic losses caused by other invasive parasites that were disseminated by man-assisted movements of carp and other commercially important fish.
