Insect lipids mobilized by adipokinetic hormones

  • Original language description

A major transport form of lipids in insect haemolymph are diacyglycerols (DGs). Their mobilization from the fat body and their transport to the target effectors is under the control of adipokinetic hormones (AKHs). The DG molecular species were investigated in haemolymph of Locusta migratoria and Pyrrhocoris apterus after the application of their innate AKHs. Various AKHs mobilized the DGs selectively with preference of those possessing the C18 and C16 fatty acids (FAs). The fat body FAs with a carbon chain longer than 18 did not participate in the mobilization. The relationship between the AKH action and FA distribution in DGs are summarized and discussed in detail.
