Occurrence of age-0 year dwarf pikeperch Sander lucioperca in late summer ? an overlooked phenomenon in reservoirs
Original language description
Late summer sampling of pelagic age-0 fish communities in three Czech reservoirs and one Dutch reservoir revealed occurrences of extremely small age-0 pikeperch Sander lucioperca (ES pikeperch, mean standard length SL 24 mm, minimal SL 13 mm) alongside more normal sized pikeperch that are found at the end of the first growing season (normal sized pikeperch, mean SL 50 mm), resulting in two clearly size-separated cohorts. References to such small age-0 pikeperch in lakes or reservoirs during this time ofyear and in such extensive numbers (similar or even higher numbers of ES pikeperch in comparison with normal sized age-0 pikeperch) are almost missing in the scientific literature and the presence of ES pikeperch is contradictory to the common understanding of the reproductive biology of this species. Because of size-dependent winter mortality, this overlooked phenomenon can have a deeper effect on population dynamics of this valuable species.
