Comparative study of salinity tolerance of an oceanic sea skater, Halobates micans and its closely related fresh water species, Metrocoris histrio
Original language description
This study examined limits of water salinity tolerance in two sea skater sepacies collected from different habitats: open Pacific ocean vs. fresh water. We found that salinity tolerance reflects, in both species, the salinity conditions in their respective habitats. While the oceanic species is highly sensitive to drop of salinity below 0.1%, the fresh water species exhibits rapid mortality when exposed to salinities higher than 0.5%.
