Gall-forming insects in a lowland tropical rainforest: low species diversity in an extremely specialised quild

  • Original language description

In this study, we investigated the diversity and specialisation of gall-forming insect communities in Papua New Guinea. A huge number of galled plant modules were collected and reared from 32 rainforest tree species resulting in species richness of 78 gall species with high specialisation of 0.98. It was concluded that the gall-forming guild was species-poor and highly specialised compared to other herbivorous guilds, but possibly richer in gall species than previously acknowledged in tropical rainforests.
