Effect of natural toxins and adipokinetic hormones on the activity of digestive enzymes in the midgut of the cockroach Periplaneta americana
Original language description
This study examined the effect of natural toxins and pathogens on the activity of digestive enzymes in the midgut of the cockroach Periplaneta americana. The results showed that all tested toxins/pathogens elicited stress responses when applied into the cockroach body. The venom from H. hebetor showed no effect on digestive enzyme activities, however, infection by I. fumosorosea caused mostly decrease in activity of all enzymes. Finally, destruxin A inhibited the activity of the enzymes, but application of adipokinetic hormones (AKHs) did reverse this inhibition. Overall, the results demonstrated the variable effect of the tested toxins/pathogens on the digestive processes of cockroach, as well as the variable ability of AKHs to counteract these effects.n
