Pisum sativum (Pea)
Original language description
The recently released pea genome sequence is the first pseudo-chromosome level sequence representing the Fabeae, a taxonomic tribe characterized by large genomes. The pea genome contains a large proportion of repeated sequences, most of which are transposable elements (TEs). Since pea’s divergence from other tribes, the pea genome has been subject to higher rates of nucleotide mutations and gene duplications and deletions than other sequenced legume genomes. The high abundance of LTR/Gypsy Ogre TEs likely influenced the pea genome’s rapid evolution. Genome resequencing of Pisum accessions further highlighted translocation and transposition events within the genus.
