Soil biodiversity conservation for mitigating climate change

  • Original language description

Soil harbors tremendous biodiversity that, to a large extent, effects most of the key ecosystem functions of the soil such as organic-matter dynamics and C sequestration in soil, greenhouse gas emission from soil, nutrient turnover, and soil water storage. At the same time, soil biota are very sensitive to changes in soil environment and vegetation that may by triggered by ongoing climate change. Consequently, changes in composition and biomass of soil biota may feed back to changes in many ecosystem processes, which may affect overall ecosystem response to climate change. In addition to climatic change, soil biota are sensitive to soil and ecosystem management and these changes may also effect overall ecosystem response to climate change. The relationships among climate change, soil biota, ecosystem functions, and land use and management options will be explored in this chapter.
