Viruses are non-cellular living entities. Their particles are formed by a nucleic acid surrounded by a protein capsid, which together form the so-called nucleocapsid. Nucleocapsids of some virus species are additionally enveloped by a host-cell-derived lipid envelope containing viral proteins. All three structural components (nucleic acid, capsid and envelope) are incredibly variable, for example, the viral genome can be encoded by either an RNA or DNA molecule, which can be single or double stranded, linear or circular, unsegmented or segmented, etc.n
