Original language description
This chapter provides a brief overview of the literature about the applicability of magnetic fluids in various areas of biosciences, biotechnology and environmental technology. Magnetic fluids were used for magnetic modification of diamagnetic materials and synthesis of magnetically responsive materials. Both free ferrofluids and ferrofluid modified materials were employed for separation and removal of biologically active compounds, pollutants and cells, immobilization of target molecules and cells, magnetic solid phase extraction and related (bio)analytical procedures. Ferrofluid modified materials also exhibit peroxidase-like catalytic activity. The discussed materials and processes have a great application potential.
