Original language description
Broad fish tapeworms (cestodes) of the genera Adenocephalus, Dibothriocephalus and Diphyllobothrium (syn. Diplogonoporus), some of which are widely distributed all around the world, represent causative agents of human diphyllobothriosis, one of the most important fish-borne zoonoses. Sparganosis is caused by plerocercoids (spargana) of species of Spirometra which are close relatives of broad fish tapeworms. Mammals (including humans) and piscivorous birds are definitive hosts and acquire these parasites by eating raw or poorly cooked fish, frogs or snakes containing plerocercoid larvae. Broad tapeworms mature in mammals, especially carnivores, and birds, which represent reservoirs for these cestodes. To date, 20 species have been reported as human pathogens, these species can be properly identified by molecular tools. Deep-freezing and sufficient cooking of fish are efficient methods to kill broad tapeworms in food.
