Evolution of Plastids and Mitochondria in Diatoms

  • Original language description

Mitochondria and plastids as eukaryotic organelles evolved from bacterial ancestors. While the mitochondria of diatoms follow the phylogeny of the eukaryotic ancestry of diatoms, the evolutionary path of diatom plastids is more convoluted. Diatom plastids were acquired via eukaryote-eukaryote symbiosis, and hence do not share the evolutionary history of the non-plastid components of the diatom cell. Such a path of plastid evolution is not unique among the eukaryotes in fact, the majority of algal groups have so-called complex plastids, which were acquired from eukaryotic plastid donors. In the case of diatom plastids, it is clear that they trace back to a red algal ancestor, but it is currently not clear how exactly this plastid progenitor made its way into the ancestor of photosynthetic Stramenopiles. In this chapter, we discuss hypotheses for the path of diatom plastid acquisition present examples of even more derived states of diatom plastids, as endosymbionts in dinoflagellates, or as relicts of a photosynthetic past in non-photosynthetic diatoms and discuss the consequences of complex plastid acquisition in diatoms, namely the necessity of modified protein targeting compared to organisms with primary plastids, and the consequences of the rearrangement of the intracellular distribution of a portion of the proteome between plastids, mitochondria and other cellular compartments, on the metabolism.nn
