    Can Microalgae Revitalize Phytotoxic Soils?

    Microalgae represent a variable group of microscopic photoautotrophic organisms that include both prokaryotic cyanobacteria and eukaryotic algae, isolated from fresh and sea water, soil and various extreme habitats. Compared to higher plants, algae have faster growth, higher photosynthetic efficiency and the ability to colonize different ecological niches. The advantage of using microalgae for bioremediation or recultivation compared to higher plants mainly lies in their simple cell structures, easier access to CO2 and nutrients and ability to grow in extreme environments.nThe goal of this study was to design and apply biotechnologies for the revival of phytotoxic soils (e.g. post-mining dumps) based on the use of cyanobacteria and microscopic algae, or their consortium. Microalgal strains isolated from biocrusts from the Litovska post-mining dump (Northern Czechia) and others coming from algal collections were tested in laboratory experiments for a grow on soils. Their physiological state (photosynthetic activity, cell growth and division), and growth conditions (temperature, light intensity, pH, nutrition) were monitored and optimized. The lab-scale experiments were followed by greenhouse experiments with selected strains on phytotoxic soil. Analyses of soil (organic matter content, available organic carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus contents, pH, conductivity, microbial respiration and microbial biomass) were conducted to evaluate the ability of used microalgae to improve the physical, chemical and biological soil quality. Strains of genus Nostoc, Trichormus, Anabaena or Klebsormidium were found as suitable candidates for soil revitalization.n
