Multidirectional protein trafficking between organellar and cytosolic ribosomes: insight from nucleomorph-containing organisms
Original language description
Plastid-bearing eukaryotes typically contain three types of ribosomes, cytosolic, mitochondrial and plastidial, and thus three homologues of those ribosomal proteins (RPs) that are present in each of these ribosomes. Our pan-eukaryotic survey of organellar RPs revealed that several RPs of mitochondrial origin replaced their counterparts in the plastid ribosomes in plants, and vice versa. Further, both plant organellar ribosomes contain a paralog of a cytosolic RP. In addition to these cases confirmed by cryoEM, we found several putative inter-ribosomal replacements of RPs outside plants.
