ATP synthase dimers: Better together
Original language description
Mitochondrial ATP synthases are nanomolecular rotary machines that play a crucial role in both ATP production via oxidative phosphorylation and the shaping of mitochondrial cristae. While monomeric ATP synthase complexes can produce ATP, membrane bending is induced by their dimeric forms. Recent cryo-EM structures from various unicellular organisms have revealed a diverse array of ATP synthase dimers, each associated with distinct cristae morphologies.
