Public awareness is essential for societal support of conservation, including management of biological invasions. Traditional methods for assessing awareness are limited, and its role in alien species invasions remains unclear. The rise of social media, such as Twitter (X), offers new opportunities to study public perceptions. We analyzed over 500,000 tweets containing “invasive species” (2006–2021) to identify the most mentioned taxa, habitats, and topics generating engagement. Mammals, especially domesticated and urban pests, were most discussed, while aquatic and related habitats dominated mentions. Location-based hashtags like Great Lakes and Florida showed higher engagement with regional issues. A small number of users produced most retweeted content, indicating the influence of key accounts. Our findings demonstrate the value of digital data for identifying prominent taxa, habitats, regions, and voices, helping to refine communication, shape policy, and enhance public involvement in managing biological invasions.
