    Phylogenetic heterogeneity within the Cuspidothrix clade (Nostocales, Cyanobacteria): Dolichospermum longicellulare as a black sheep of its genus

    Four cyanobacterial strains were isolated from a planktonic population morphologically matching Dolichospermum longicellulare, collected from Ploch & yacute., fishpond in the Czech Republic. Detailed morphological and morphometric characteristics were recorded, the 16S rRNA genes were sequenced, and secondary metabolite production was screened. The strains under study clustered within the genus-level phylogenetic clade of Cuspidothrix, although they lacked the autapomorphic features of Cuspidothrix such as pointed filament ends and subsymmetrical filament structure, and corresponded rather to the genus Dolichospermum. An overview of what is known about other 'non-Cuspidothrix' strains from this cluster is provided. This study provides the first sequencing data on the little-known species, D. longicellulare, and represents the first report on its occurrence in the Czech Republic.
