The Institute of Soil Biology (ISB) came into existence on January 1st 1986 through the transformation of the former Laboratory of Soil Biology established within the Institute of Landscape Ecology in 1979. The ISB has its resistence in the town of ČeskéBudějovice (Budweis) in Southern Bohemia, 140 km south of Prague, on a campus shared with five other Institutes of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (AS CR) and the University of South Bohemia. It covers important fields of contemporary soilbiological research, particularly studying the soil biota contribution to soil functioning and structure, analysing interactions between animals and microorganisms and between soil biota and both biotic and abiotic structures and processes in soils, anddealing with the impacts of anthropogenic pressure on ecosystems.
