Daphnia galeata life history response to heterogeneous food conditions and dissolved chemicals in the Římov Reservoir.

  • Original language description

Laboratory cultivation experiments were carried out in order to determine the response of D. galeata to food conditions and dissolved chemicals in the water collected in three contrasting sites of the Římov Reservoir - upper part, epilimnion nearthe dam, and hypolimnion near the dam. As indicated by life history traits investigated, food conditions were more favourable in the water from the upper part of the reservoir than near the dam. In some cases food quality in the hypolimnion was differentfrom that in the epilimnion, inducing larger clutches of smaller eggs and longer postembryonic development in experimental animals. Results of experiments with filtered water indicate that dissolved chemicals may take part in shaping life histories of Daphnia in the reservoir. In some of the experiments dissolved chemicals induced shorter postembryonic development and smaller primiparae in the animals cultivated in the water from the upper part of the reservoir.
