Hysteresis in reversal of Central European mountain lakes from atmospheric acidification.
Original language description
Emissions of S and N compounds in Central Europe declined by ~70% and ~35%, respectively, during the last decade. The parallel reduction in deposition of S and N to mountain ecosystems has resulted in a reversal of acidification in the Tatra Mountains (TM) and Bohemian Forest (BF) lakes. Between the late 1980s and 1990s, the respective concentrations of sulphate and nitrate decreased by 22 7 and 12 7 mol/l in TM and by 19 7 and 15 10 mol/l in BF. This decrease was compensated in part (1) by a decrease in Ca and Mg (17 7 mol/l) and protons (4 6 mol/l) , and an increase in bicarbonate (10 10 mol/l) in the TM lakes, and (2) by a decrease in Al (7 4 mol/l), Ca and Mg (9 6 mol/l), and protons (6 5 mol/l) in the BF lakes. Despite their rapid decline, the current concentrations of sulphate and nitrate in the lakes are higher than the observed values at comparable emission rates in the past. This hysteresis in chemical reversal delays biological recovery of the lakes.
