The diet and growth of larval and juvenile pikeperch (Stizostedion lucioperca (L.)): A comparative study of fishponds and a reservoir.
Original language description
Diet composition and feeding selectivity of larval and juvenile pikeperch (Stizostedion lucioperca) reared in ponds were investigated and compared with the diet of pikeperch from a reservoir. In general, similar trends were observed in both habitats. Rotifers were found of minor importance and were soon replaced by nauplii of cyclopoid (ponds, reservoir) or calanoid (reservoir) copepods. Up to a body length of 15 mm copepods played the most important role in the pikeperch diet. From this length onwardsa clear positive selection for larger relatively to smaller prey could be recognized. In the reservoir shift from copepods to cladocerans was observed from a body length of 20 mm. Growth of pikeperch was found significantly faster in nursing ponds than in the reservoir.
