Carbon flow dynamics in the pelagic community of the Sau Reservoir (Catalonia, NE Spain).
Original language description
Longitudinal changes in the pelagic community structure and activity in the eutrophic Sau Reservoir (NE Spain) were studied between 1996 and 1999. We analysed profiles from river to dam, measuring dissolved organic carbon, bacterial parameters, chlorophyll-a concentration, heterotrophic nanoflagelate (HNF) and ciliate abundances and bacterivory, and zooplankton density. The role of microbial and classical food chains were compared in the reservoir by analysing river-to-dam gradients in biomass and carbon and their temporal changes. The detritic metabolic pathway was more important the inflow part, due to high allochthonous organic matter loads supporting the development of microbial food webs. Protozoans consumed most of the bacterial production in thereservoir. Ciliate carbon biomass and bacterivory contributions were larger than those of the HNF. We estimated ciliate species-specific grazing rates on bacteria and distinguished the most important bacterivores.
