Molecular composition of the W chromatin in some moth species studied by comparative genomic hybridization (CGH).
Original language description
Interphase nuclei from females of most Lepidoptera species contain a heterochromatin body (W chromatin) that is derived from the W chromosome. Comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) with a probe mixture of genomic DNAs from females and males highlightedthe W chromatin and revealed a high concentration of repetitive sequences in the W chromatin of Bombyx mori, Ephestia kuehniella, and Galleria mellonella. The W chromatin of all three species has accumulated repetitive sequences that also occur elsewhere in the respective genome. Accordingly, in B. mori, retrotransposons BMC1 and Bm1, which were derived from the W of B. mori, mapped to the W chromosome and to autosomes.
