Habitat of pre-hibernating larvae of the endangered butterfly Euphydryas aurinia (Lepidoptera : Nymphalidae): What can be learned from vegetation composition and architecture?
Original language description
Ecology of pre-hibernating gregarious larvae of the endangered Marsh Fritillary butterfly (Euphydryas aurinia) was studied in Western Bohemia, Czech Republic. The species inhabits moist seminatural meadows managed by light grazing and haymaking; the onlylocal host plant is Succisa pratensis. The larvae are positively associated with short cushion-forming grasses and negatively associated with competitively superior tall grasses; they prefer nitrogen-poor and more acidic conditions, and densely clumpedhost plants growing in low to medium height of sward with some mechanical disturbance. Conservation management should mimic the dynamics of traditional land use.
