A new coccidian parasite (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) from the rufous elephant shrew, Elephantulus rufescens, from Kenya

  • Original language description

Eimeria elephantuli n.sp. is the first species of coccidian parasite reported from the rufous elephant shrew, Elephantulus rufescens. Oocysts are subspherical, 29.4 (27-34) × 26.1 (23-29) ?m, with a distinct spherical oocyst residuum and polar granule. The oocyst wall is bilayered, brownish and finely granular. Sporocysts are ellipsoidal, 12.6 (11-14) × 8.8 (8-10) ?m, possessing Stieda and substiedal bodies. The sporocyst residuum consists of numerous fine granules scattered irregularly among the sporozoites. Sporozoites are vermiform, with a large posterior, bean-shaped refractile body. Individual macrogamonts, presumed to be those of E. elephantuli, had large wall-forming bodies and were found in the enterocytes of the small intestine.
