Georgia’s NATO Membership via the Lens of Offensive Realism: Prevented in 2008, Halted Ever Since
Original language description
Applying the theory of Offfensive Realism formulated by John Mearsheimer and building on previous original research by Emmanuel Karagiannis, the author raises and answers three critical questions about Georgia's prospects for NATO membership as of 2020. Doing so, the article adopts three structural causes of the Russo-Georgian August 2008 War identified by Emmanuel Karagiannis and analyses all of them separately with empirical realities in period 2008-2020. The article concludes that Georgia's full membership in NATO will not be possible without yet another fundamental shift in the regional balance of power in the South Caucasus, where Russia currently (as of 2020) dominates.
