The goal of the presented paper is to introduce the audience to selected methods (especially future scenario-based method) and their usability in predicting future development of security and operating environment and to light up their place in the process of creation of security and defence policy of the state. The paper deals with the possibilities, practical applications, risks and limitations of using the selected methods in predicting the future development of security and operating environment andaddresses experience with its usage in recently approved strategic security and military documents in the Czech Republic and NATO.
