Preventing and Combating of Small Arms and Light Weapons
Original language description
In most of the ongoing conflicts in the world, outdated, but still cheap and effective military technologies, are used, mainly represented in the category of small arms and light weapons. Although the birth of such technologies falls into the past for several decades, their use and proliferation is an important accelerator of armed conflicts at present. Whereas in media the proliferation is primarily associated with weapons of mass destruction and the issue of small arms and light weapons is relativelyneglected, this contribution aims to bring a closer look at this issue. A growing number of SALW in the current conflicts (especially in Africa and the Middle East) makes this phenomenon an important factor that influences the success and duration of military involvement in conflict, and the extent of success and stability of its post-conflict phase. This paper deals with the resources, the current state and projected trends in the SALW proliferation.
