Over the past years defence spending by some NATO´s member nations has shrunk. While the world is changing, NATO?s essential mission will remain the same: to ensure that the Alliance remains an unparalleled community of freedom, peace, security and shared values. How to survive austerity, minimise impact of cuts and ensure effectiveness of the Alliance? By Smart Defence. Crisis makes cooperation between nations no longer a choise. It is a necessity. It is also a way how NATO can help nations to build greater security with their resources but more coordination and coherence, so that together they can avoid the financial crisis from becoming a security crisis. Because security is also about military capabilities that allows governments to defend their populations against new threats and possibly to engage in crisis management.
