Czech Military Engineer Support of Environmental Protection during Peace Support Operations

  • Original language description

With NATO's increasing requirements for environmental protection, environmental security and implementation of climate change issues, a study of the current state of dealing with these problems among member states is necessary. One of the most debated topics since 1970s currently faces new challenges. The presented study deals with problematic aspects of environmental protection. The article focuses on the Czech engineer units (the 15th Engineer Regiment), an authority responsible for provision of environmental protection tasks within the Czech Armed Forces in scope of NATO's doctrines related to military engineering. Based on the proposal of aggregated areas of environmental concern, an analysis of the current capabilities of the Czech engineer units is carried out. An analysis is set in the use of engineer troops during the peace support operations led by NATO. The study concludes that the fulfillment of environmental tasks by the Czech engineer units within peace support operation cannot be done without the support of other deployed units. The current state of the Czech engineer support of environmental protection is not sufficient for independent deployment and needs to be reconsidered. The reason of reconsideration is the possibility of deployment in peace support operations other than those conducted by NATO, related to a lack of shared assets.
