Plasma nitriding of deep narrow cavities
Original language description
The nitriding behaviour of heat-treated alloyed carbon steel was carried out on two cylinders samples with different diameters. The influence of microstructure and nitriding conditions on the thickness and hardness of nitrided layer were investigated. Prior to nitriding, cylinders samples were quenched and tempered. Plasma nitriding was performed at 500°C for 6 hours with mixture of H2 and N2 in plasma nitriding furnace. Structure and mechanical properties of nitrided layers were characterized using optical spectrometry, optical microscopy and microhardness testing. Plasma nitriding process increased the surface hardness of samples by 100%. The nitrided depth was also estimated using cross-sectional microhardness profiles. The results show that plasmanitriding creates a nitrided layer consisting of compound layer and nitrogen diffusion layer.
