Elementary solution to the jeep problem with one vehicle
Original language description
This contribution deals with an elementary solution of the jeep problem with one vehicle alias the single jeep problem. The jeep problem, also called desert crossing problem or exploration problem, is a well known logistics problem. A jeep must cross a desert wider than it can travel on one tank of fuel with the help of optimal arrangement of fuel dumps along the route. The available literature refers, inter alia, only solution of this problem without its detailed and successive derivation. In the contribution an elementary solution to the single jeep problem is derived and illustrated for small amounts of units of fuel. A general solution to this problem is also presented. At the conclusion solutions for some of the outstanding amounts of fuel, computed by the using of the computer algebra system Maple and its programming language, are presented in form of a table.
