The influence of notch geometry and plasma nitriding parameters on the notch toughness of steel

  • Original language description

Plasma nitriding is one of the most important surface modification technologies, usually implemented as a final operation to improve the mechanical properties. In this paper, we focused in the field of influence notch geometry represented by V and U notch on notch toughness of the plasma nitrided steel. The experiments were performed on the DIN 1654/4 steel (CSN 41 2042.4), specimens were manufactured with V and U notch, according to CSN ISO 148-1. These specimens were plasma nitrided under selected nitriding conditions: plasma sputtering (cleaning) at 480 (°C), nitriding at 500 (°C), process duration t = 10 and 20 (h), p = 280 (Pa), U = 530 (V) and variable gas mixture ratio of 24N2: 8H2 (l/h) and 8N2: 24H2 (l/h). The work confirmed that nitrided steel become more brittle and with decreasing radius of the notch the notch toughness of nitrided steel was decreased, but for different gas composition, the notch toughness behaves quite distinctly. The toughness of steel was increased with
