Analysis of the Influence of Initiating Inclusions on Fatigue Life of Plasma Nitrided Steels

The analysis of non-metallic initiation inclusions in fatigue live field is studied. The testing material for experi-ments is steel CSN 41 5340 (corresponds 41CrAlMo7-10 or 1.8509). This steel is suitable for plasma nitriding pro-ces. The samples were heat treatment and follow-up plasma nitrided, then they were subjected to the fatigue three-point bending rotation tests. According to the principle of the test is under constant speed and load decreases to 107 cycles does not fatigue fracture of the sample. The thickness of the nitride diffusion layer has been won the microhardness measuring from the surface to the core of the samples. With the use of fractographic analysis the nucleation point of fatigue crack has been evalu-ated. In the case of initiation inclusions were measured size and the chemical composition. Comparing the won data with the plasma nitriding proces have been obtained new results.
