The creation of cartography model TM100 from DMU25 data
Original language description
The cartographic generalization of topographic maps content is very complicated processes and even now the used processes are not perfect. All topographic maps produced by Military geographic service at this moment are created in program ArcGIS, including generalization of their content. However, generalization procedures were created at the beginning of the 21st century. Current version of ArcGIS enables more automation of generalization; however, the question is what parameters should be automatically set to maintain the character of landscape. That is why many options how to generalize selected layers were tried and then the most suitable one was chosen and made into generalization model. During generalization were mainly used tools from ArcToolbox and for creating generalization models then Model Builder. The main goal of this paper was to describe possibilities how to apply options of current ArcGIS for creating cartographic model of topographic map 1 : 100 000 from data with resolution 1 : 25 000. Generalization of selected layers was processed by generalization models almost automatically according to stated parameters. However, it was not possible to completely eliminate a subjective view. Every parameter was chosen based on cartographer's considerations and it is more than possible that different person would have picked different values. And the results also need visualisation and harmonizing of the features. Therefore, I believe that automating generalization facilitates the whole process creating maps. However, the computing is not advanced enough to completely replace a human factor. That's why I would consider creation of generalization models as a base from which other generalization steps will be made.
